Kashruth Policies

The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC is committed to the inclusion of the entire Jewish community.  Our Kashruth Policy is designed to be respectful of the rules of Kashruth within the context and limitations of our local community. Our policy is to adhere to the following guidelines.

  • All food that, by its very nature, cannot be kosher, such as pork products, shellfish, or other specifically forbidden foods may not be brought into the JCC or served at an event at the JCC.
  • Within a meal, meat and dairy products may not be mixed or served at the same time.
  • Food served by the JCC at all SSBJCC programs and meetings on site, shall be either dairy, meat (kosher) or parve (containing neither meat nor dairy).
  • Food served at all SSBJCC programs and meetings off-site shall be either dairy, meat or parve.
  • Outside caterers or private functions such as birthday parties, or room rentals can either serve dairy, meat or parve. Pork or shellfish products are prohibited.
  • Events held on our campus, but outside, may have both meat and dairy vendors available and is then up to the individual to choose.
  • As a courtesy to the wide variety of Jewish practices, members and guests can bring food into the JCC for their own consumption, excluding shellfish and pork products.

Ours is a kosher-style policy. We do not require that all food products or ingredients be certified as Kosher (hekshered), nor do we require kashering of the kitchen, dishes, or utensils.
